Diversity Day

At Thames Park Secondary School we celebrated our first Diversity Dropdown Day! Each year group focused on a different element of diversity, and there were lots of activities and events throughout the day.

Year 7 looked at issues surrounding race and ethnicity. They watched a video about the black doll white doll experiment and what that teaches us about the subliminal messages that we all receive from society.

Year 8 focused on issues facing the LGBTQ community. They looked at representation and misrepresentation of LGBTQ community in the media.

Year 9 spent the day examining the Gender equality agenda. They explored topics such as gender stereotypes, non tender masculinity, feminism and intersectionality.  They also watch a number of inspirational female speakers who have achieved impressive positions in the world of STEM.

Throughout the day, students and staff wore their cultural clothes and brought in food from their cultures for other students to try. There was a carnival atmosphere in the canteen at lunchtime with students and staff enjoying and dancing to cultural music.

We also had lots of inspirational guest speakers who contributed their time. These included a representative from the local LGBTQ+ communitymand a accomplished women who work in STEM.

Diversity Dropdown Day was a great success, and we hope to make it an annual event. We would like to thank all of the students and staff who took part, and all of the guest speakers who contributed their time.

What is diversity?

Diversity is the presence of differences within a group or organization. These differences can be based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or any other personal characteristic.

Why is diversity important?

Diversity is important because it allows us to learn from each other and to see the world from different perspectives. It also helps us to create a more inclusive society.

How can we promote diversity?

We can promote diversity by celebrating our differences and by creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to interact with each other. We can also promote diversity by educating people about the importance of diversity and by providing them with the tools and resources they need to be inclusive.
